The windsurfing community at Piper’s Lagoon has lost one of its brightest smiles. Saul Spearing passed away on December 17, 2024, at the age of 54, following a courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A dedicated professional engineer and family man, Saul was equally defined by his boundless passion for the outdoors and his adventurous spirit.
For those of us at the Piper's Beach Launch, Saul was a quintessential fixture of the Nanaimo waterfront. Living just footsteps from the park, he was a familiar silhouette walking down Place Road, board and sail balanced expertly on his head as he made his way to the water. Whether the conditions were epic or marginal, Saul arrived with a big, friendly grin and a helping hand for anyone in need.
While Piper’s was his home turf, Saul’s love for the wind took him across the globe. From the rugged West Coast and the Great Lakes of Ontario to the warm waters of Costa Rica and Mexico, he always prioritized finding a spot to get a sail in. His athleticism extended far beyond the board; he was an accomplished rock climber—having met his wife, Tricia, at the climbing gym—as well as a mountain biker, skier, stand-up paddle board surfer and fisherman.
Saul’s legacy is carried on by Tricia and their children, Teya and Rowan, whom he loved dearly. In his memory, the family encourages the community to support "Saul’s Sanguine Squad" by donating blood through Canadian Blood Services.
As we look out across the whitecaps at Piper’s, we will remember Saul’s determination, his mechanical wit, and that unmistakable image of him carrying his gear toward the next great session.
Fair winds, Saul. You are deeply missed.
