After the epic tow session, I figured I’d give wing foiling a go.
Wind looked light, but I pumped up the 5m anyway—almost didn’t even bring it. Stayed on the 700 foil. Getting out was a bit of a grind… punched through the shorebreak with some suffering, a lot of paddling, and a couple humbling moments.
Struggled to get up at first… but then—boom—on my feet.
Blasted past the surfers rock and linked into a beauty.
Tacked back out… and that’s when it hit me:
I was the only person in the water.
The whole lineup. Mine.
What The actual fuck, Chicama all to myself.
No idea what happened—shift change, lunch break, the universe lining things up—but for about 30 minutes, I had Chicama completely to myself.
Wing foiling is a different beast though. Way more work. Big holes in the wind you’ve got to pump through. That 5m wing turns into a parachute when it drops—tons of drag, legs burning trying to stay in the wave.
But the tradeoff?
Total freedom.
No boat. No safety net. Just you out there.
Honestly… it makes it a little scarier—and a lot more exhilarating.
Rode for about an hour and a half. Of course, the Apple Watch missed half of it—classic.
Then things got interesting.
My wing started deflating… and I was way out at the far point.
That’ll spike your heart rate real quick.
With a bit of anxiety creeping in, I snagged a bomb and pumped like hell all the way back toward the surfers rock. Crew started yelling, so I backed off… and then couldn’t get back up.
Spent about 20 minutes trying before finally calling it.
Deflated wing. Slightly deflated ego.
Paddle of shame.
But honestly—that’s part of it. Paddle power is survival out here. As wingers, it’s our lifeline.
And don’t ask me to choose between towing and winging… I’ll just keep throwing money at the tow boat until you find me broke on East Hastings.
Because there might be nothing better than this.
That said—winging was unreal. The independence alone is worth it.
I’m coming back next year.
